History of Moulin Rouge

moulin rouge tickets

The history of Moulin Rouge dates back to 1889 when it was first co-founded by Charles Zidler and Joseph Oller, who nicknamed their establishment Le Premier Palais des Femmes (the first Women Palace). The halls of Moulin Rouge revolutionized the industry of live entertainment by introducing the French Cancan dance. Originally introduced as a seductive dance, the French Cancan evolved into its own and eventually got introduced across Europe as a cabaret (as we know it today).

Standing tall in the southwest of Montmartre, on Boulevard de Clichy, Moulin Rouge with the iconic red windmill on its rooftop, is one of Paris’ biggest tourist (and locals) attractions, with patrons coming from all over the world to witness the glitz and glamor of Moulin Rouge’s cabaret.

Visitor tips

  1. Depending on your budget, schedule, and the experience you wish to have, choose your tickets to the Moulin Rouge.
Note: Moulin Rouge (the show) is in French.
  2. It is recommended that you arrive at least 30 minutes in advance for the show.
  3. Since seating is assigned just before the show (no option to select seats in advance), arrive early so that you are ahead in the line and can (hopefully) get good tickets.
  4. The dress code for Moulin Rouge is straightforward – a suit/business attire/evening dress.
  5. Clothing and footwear to avoid wearing include shorts, bermuda shorts, flip-flops, trainers, and sportswear.
  6. The minimum age to attend a show at Moulin Rouge is 6 years old. But be informed that the show Féerie shows some upper body nudity.
  7. The late show (11pm) gets over by 1am, although it can run longer too. Note that most public transport in Paris stops running at 2am. So you can either keep an eye on the time or make alternative transport arrangements.
  8. Moulin Rouge doesn’t have on-site parking. The nearest parking lot is Clichy Montmartre car park (290 meters away).
  9. Photography/filming of any kind is not allowed at Mouline Rouge.
  10. If you want to store your belongings (coats, small bags, etc), a locker facility is available on-site.

Things to do in Montmartre neighborhood

If you are in Montmartre only to attend a show at Moulin Rouge, here’s a suggestion - reach the neighborhood 3 hours before the show. This way, you can visit some landmark sites and maybe grab coffee at a quaint Parisian cafe.

Wall of Love

One of Paris’ must-see romantic spots, the Wall of Love, was created by artists Frédéric Baron and Claire Kito in 2000. The wall is navy blue and made of more than 600 enameled lava rock tiles, and on each tile are the words “I love you” written, in more than 250 languages.

Montmartre Museum

Set inside the former residence of famous artists, Renoir and Valadon, the Montmartre Museum was opened in 1960 and houses paintings that depict Montmartre villages in days gone by, with farmlands and windmills. While here, visit Café Renoir, set in the museum’s gardens, overlooking its vineyards.

Place du Tertre

A cobblestone street in the heart of Montmartre, Place du Tertre is filled with quaint cafes and restaurants and an atmosphere that is lively and relaxed. Look your best while visiting this street, so you can have your portrait painted by one of the many talented street artists.

The Dome of Sacré-Coeur

Climb to the dome late in the evening and catch one of the breathtaking sunsets of your life. After all, it is one of Paris’ must-visit sunset points. The view of the neighborhood and the basilica are impressive from above.
